Adjournment
“The Blue Vase”, Paul Cezanne
01 An unfinished game (:ufg)
may be adjourned and continued at a later time/date. The player to make the next move (:nm) on the board is required to write the next move on a
piece of paper which is given to the referee.
This is called a ‘sealed move’ (:sm). When the game recommences this move must be
the next move played on the chessboard.
The adjournment rule was first introduced
in 1878 in Paris.
02 60 moves must be played in a ga
French: adjourned game - partie ajournée.
An interruption in play to enable both players to obtain analytical help from their chess master-friends, chess libraries, or chess computers. If it is not possible to finish a game within the prescribed time, the
players may adjourn to continue at another time. The player whose turn it is to move at the
adjournment makes a ‘sealed move’.
