CHESMAYNE

Midi: Till There Was U

Ashtapada

Sanskrit: having 8 legs

“Landscape near Menton”, Auguste Renoir

Ancient Indian race game played on an 8 x 8 board with dice.   The rules have been lost.    The name has reference to a spider or a legendary being with eight legs.   In India some chessboards still retain the crosses which are marked on cells: these crosses are similar to the marks used in Chesmayne to indicate a blocked cell, :bc

(XR, XW, XB).    See ‘Thai’ and ‘Burmese’ chess.   A 64 celled unchequered gaming board (India), 2nd century BC and borrowed for chess.
